Brief History & Purpose of
National Student Employment Week

National Student Employment Week (NSEW) is recognized by the National Student Employment Association and its regional affiliates. The week was first proclaimed on a national level by President Clinton and has grown to include proclamations by state Governors, town/city Mayors, and Presidents of colleges and universities nationwide. The week is designed to:
  • Enhance the awareness of the student employment profession and the important role it plays in the higher education experience.

  • Recognize the millions of students who work while attending college.

  • Acknowledge the faculty & staff, who hire, supervise, and mentor the students who work in their departments, offices, and labs.

One highlight of the week is the annual naming of an institutional Student Employee and Supervisor of the Year. Nominations start at the institutional level and go on to complete for the state, regional, and national title. Students, faculty and staff from all divisions are encouraged to participate.

JHU has celebrated NSEW and the Student Employee of the Year program since 1993 when the program was first recognized by the regional association. The JHU Supervisor of the Year award was established in 1999. To see pictures and a list of past winners please Click here:
